Black Academy: Tracing Afro-Descendant History from Research to Educational Impact

My name is Julia, I am from Frankfurt, Germany, and am studying Sociology and Anthropology for my bachelor degree. I will be joining Meine WElt e.V. and PLACE e.V. as an ASA Intern in Germany for the first three months of the ASA-project: “Black Academy: Tracing Afro-Descendant History from Research to Educational Impact”. I will also spend an additional month with PLACE for Africa in Benin. Amongst other things my ASA team will be working on the development of various educational materials, all with a post-colonial approach.
My professional background includes extensive experience in anti-racism work as well as internships at a pan-African sports club in Germany and an Equal Employment Opportunity Office in the United States. I have also participated in several exchange and study abroad programs in Greece, France, China, England, the United States, and Italy. In my free time, I enjoy pottery and nail art.
My motivation for joining ASA stems from my long-standing engagement with Africa-related political issues. This includes the planning and implementation of a year-long workshop and educational series on African politics, organizing events such as African Liberation Day in collaboration with Pan-Africanists from Burkina Faso, the United States, and Canada, as well as leading anti-colonial city tours in Frankfurt. These experiences have deepened my understanding of postcolonial questions and the importance of addressing historical contexts. Through ASA, I hope to expand my knowledge in diverse Afrocentric education and bring together different perspectives.
