The more you look into colonial history, the more there is to discover that is actually more or less known, but is still hardly known, and often leaves you speechless when you rediscover the connections.
How much do you know about this?

  • that the German Reich had developed into one of the world’s leading colonial powers with a special model of racist colonial policy by the time of the First World War,
  • or that Mannheim played a leading role in the hoarding and display of people and goods from the colonies,
  • or how many African freedom fighters are you aware of?

A group of students did not have many answers to these questions either, so they developed content from German colonial history as part of a university project, each with their own focus. The focus is on German colonial history in Africa, with a particular focus on Mannheim.

After explorations in Mannheim, a valuable cooperation with the Black Academy developed from this, which resulted in the attached event, for which we were also able to attract experts on the individual topics.

This event, entitled: Germany’s repressed history?
The colonial legacy using the example of Mannheim

we would like to cordially invite you. The mixture of exhibition, panel talks and encounters over food, drink and music is intended to provide a suitable framework for reflecting together on the topic of colonial history and its significance for us today.
As we have to budget for food and drink, please register in advance. Click here to register.

The cooperation with the Black Academy is part of the partnership with the city of Mannheim. The Black Academy initiative in Mannheim is supported by the municipal action fund to strengthen civil society engagement against right-wing radicalism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and antiziganism.

We look forward to lively interest!
